Three Questions to Ask Before Paying for Dent Repair

The same dent gets quoted at $600, $1,100, and $1,400 by three shops in the same ZIP code. The spread reflects real differences in technique, warranty, and technician experience that rarely show up in a single-number quote. Three questions cut through most of it. We use these on every shop call and we recommend you do too.

"Is the quote for PDR, conventional body work, or a hybrid?"

This is the single biggest question. Paintless dent repair runs $75 to $800 per panel. Conventional body work on the same dent runs $500 to $2,500. If the paint is intact and the metal is not stretched, PDR should be the default. If the shop quotes you conventional pricing without first checking whether PDR is possible, you are paying for work you may not need.

A good shop will tell you up front which technique applies and why. A hybrid quote (PDR first, with conventional fallback if the dent does not fully recover) is also honest and common. A shop that quotes one flat number without distinguishing the technique is either lumping everything into body work pricing (you overpay) or undersell-then-upsell (they quote PDR, then "find" paint damage on the rack and upcharge).

"Does the quote include blending, and what is the warranty?"

Blending is the second question. When a shop repaints a single panel, the new paint rarely matches the surrounding panels perfectly, especially on cars more than three years old where sun and age have shifted the factory color. A reputable shop blends the new paint into the adjacent panels so the transition fades instead of showing as a hard seam. A cheap shop quotes for the single panel and skips the blend; the repair looks fine in the bay and visibly wrong in sunlight a month later.

Ask specifically: "Does this quote include blending into the adjacent panels, or is it panel-only?" If it is panel-only, ask what the blend adds. Typically blending a two-panel transition costs $150 to $400 more. Cheap now, painful at resale.

Warranty is the next half of this question. Industry standard for reputable shops is a lifetime warranty on workmanship (the bond between repair and paint) and a year on paint itself. If the shop offers less than that, they either do not stand behind their work or they are priced below the market because they know the repair will fail. Either way, walk.

"How long has the technician doing my car been at this?"

PDR is a hand craft. A tech with 10 years on the rod will recover dents a 5-year tech cannot, and a 5-year tech will recover dents a 2-year tech will either leave a low spot in or worsen. Shops that care about this will tell you up front who is on the job and how long they have been doing it. Shops that do not care will deflect with "our whole team is certified" and change the subject.

On conventional body work the same principle applies with paint matching. A shop with a dedicated color-match technician who has been mixing paint for a decade will pull your exact color on the first try. A rotating tech who mixes once a week will iterate two or three times and leave you with a visible mismatch.

Ask, and accept specific answers only. "Jose, 12 years on PDR, started as a Dent Wizard franchisee" is a real answer. "Our techs are all certified" is not.

Two more questions worth adding

After the three above, two bonus questions surface the remaining spread. First: "What are your labor rates per hour, and how many hours is this job?" This pulls the markup into the open. Most shops will quote a flat number but happily break it into rate and hours if asked. Compare across three shops and the cheap-labor, long-hours shop versus the high-labor, short-hours shop often ends up identical. The fast shop is usually the better pick because the tech is experienced enough to do it in fewer hours.

Second: "If I bring you competing quotes from two other shops, will you match the lower one?" About 30 percent of shops will match. Another 30 percent will beat it by 5 percent. The remaining 40 percent will explain why their work is worth the premium (warranty, technician, turnaround) and that explanation is usually informative. No shop should take offense at the question; any that does is telling you something about how they handle pressure.

When to skip the call and use a mobile PDR tech

For small to medium dents with intact paint, a mobile PDR tech beats a shop on price and convenience. They come to your house or office, work in your driveway, and finish in under two hours. Price is typically $75 to $400 depending on size and location. Downsides: no shop warranty paperwork, harder to chase if the repair fails, limited to good-weather days. For a $150 ding on a door panel, the tradeoff is usually worth it.
